About Operation Art

Every year schools across New South Wales are invited to participate in Operation Art, an initiative of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in association with the New South Wales Department of Education. The Operation Art program provides a forum for schools and students to demonstrate their visual arts achievements through exhibitions at the Armory Gallery, Sydney Olympic Park and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Virtual artmaking lessons

This year, Operation Art and The Armory Gallery are very excited to once again offer virtual artmaking lessons to class groups of students in Years 1 to 6 in NSW public schools.

Students will be taken on a virtual excursion as they enter The Armory Gallery through the eyes of the camera to view the 2021 Operation Art Exhibition, and then participate in an interactive artmaking lesson.

  • Wednesday 15 September
  • Thursday 16 September
  • Friday 17 September 2021

Session costs: $220 per participating class group.

Bookings are limited so please secure a place for your class as soon as possible.

Learning outcomes

This virtual excursion will address the following visual arts outcomes for each relevant stage:

Stage 1 Outcomes

  • VAS1.1: Makes artworks in a particular way about experiences of real and imaginary things.
  • VAES1.2: - Experiments with a range of media in selected forms.
  • VAS1.3: - Realises what artists do, who they are and what they make.

Stage 2 Outcomes

  • VAS2.2: Uses the forms to suggest the qualities of subject matter.
  • VAS2.4: Identifies connections between subject matter in artworks and what they refer to, and appreciates the use of particular techniques.

Stage 3 Outcomes

  • VAS3.1: Investigates subject matter in an attempt to represent likenesses of things in the world.
  • VAS3.2: Makes artworks for different audiences assembling materials in a variety of ways.
  • VAS3.4: Communicates about the ways in which subject matter is represented in artworks.

Touring 50 Exhibition

The 2021 Operation Art touring exhibition comprises of 50 selected artworks from the 2020 Operation Art exhibition.

These works will tour to regional galleries throughout 2021 and will then be given to The Children's Hospital at Westmead as part of their permanent collection.

Ways to explore art in your classroom

This eResource is a series of lessons that take their inspiration from 20 artworks exhibited at the 2019 Operation Art Exhibition. The artworks have been created by students in Stages Early Stage 1 through to Stage 3 in the classroom. Each lesson contains syllabus outcomes and indicators directly linked to teaching and learning activities with suggestions for formative assessment. There are recommendations for artist studies and step by step instructions on how to create artworks in your classroom.
