About the project

The NSW Department of Education is a strong supporter of arts and initiatives that allow our students an opportunity to work beyond the classroom in order to accelerate excellence.

In the challenging year of 2020, in partnership with the Australian Theatre for Young People, we reimagined our NSW Public Schools Drama Company, from plays into a selection of short films.

This project is a collection of that talent and resilience in adapting live performance into the digital space using different techniques and COVID safe practices.

In this project, Intersection: Beat, we have compiled sections from four of the original ten scripts we commissioned with ATYP from young writers across Australia. Our cast, with no screen acting experience, adapted with incredible maturity and ability, from rehearsing online, to working with the camera and finally to blocking using the safe COVID practices of the time. No audience. No ensemble and sometimes with no set at all.

We attempted to use different strategies in each film such as green screen, location, studio, splicing and editing actors into the space as well as cover different styles of plays.

We have accompanied these with interviews and resources that cover our pivot, process and product.

Program

The films and interviews that you about to watch comprise our reimagining of the NSW Public Schools Drama Company production of Intersection: Beat 2020.

‘It’s Your Birthday Party’ is a short extract from Shevaun Rutherford’s script set on a spaceship on its long journey from Earth to our new home. Taking a small section of the script, we played with green screen technology in how we might bring part of the play to life using digital technology.

‘Maralinga’ is a short extract of Bradley Ward’s play exploring the friendship of two young men as they finish school and embark on an adventure to Maralinga with an outcome that will define the very nature of loss and trust. In this film we filmed the cast separately and spliced them together to find a unity and individuality to their narratives.

‘Fight of Flight’ by Bernadette Fam is here in its entirety and filmed using a combination of location and studio shots.

‘Race Me’ by Daisy Coyle is filmed on location and is a complete short film.

We’ve interviewed cast, writers, creatives and crew and you will find these accompanying resources here.
