Wire sculpture

In this course you will explore aluminium wire as a medium for creating a sculpture. Working with wire provides students with a great opportunity for problem solving as they consider line, space, shape, weight and balance. Aluminium wire can be easily adapted to your classroom as it's a pliable material that can be cut with scissors and is suitable for all age groups. You will learn how artists have used wire in their work, learn how to create a continuous line drawing, and how to manipulate the wire to create a continuous line portrait.

Firebird Forensics

Firebird Forensics gave 30 music students from government school students the opportunity to dissect Stravinsky’s Firebird and expand and explore their own composition skills and ideas under the guidance of Paul Rissmann. At the conclusion of the project, the students presented their work in a public performance. Students explored thematic material, scales, modes, rhythms and structures from The Firebird and use them to create a new group composition.

Firebird Forensics (Dance)

Firebird Forensics was a unique collaborative cross-curriculum composition and performance project to create a dance work that responds to Stravinsky's The Firebird Suite. The students were given individual and group choreographic tasks to devise a new work through problem-solving and manipulation of the elements of dance. This project was in conjunction with music students also reimagining Stravinsky's orchestral score to expand and explore their own musical composition skills. At the conclusion of the project, the students presented their work in a public performance.

Introduced Species 360

What happens when the man-made enters the natural landscape? What will happen to these pristine environments?

Composer Katy Abbott, uses the true events of a cargo ship in 1992 spilling nearly 29,000 duck bath toys into the North Pacific Ocean as the catalyst for her work: Introduced Species.

Six 360 cameras were embedded into the Sydney Symphony Orchestra's performance of Introduced Species. Other cameras were also placed above the orchestra and in the auditorium, to give the viewer a unique and immersive experience of the performance.

The Art of Mechanica

This eClass utilises the skills of experienced classroom practitioner, Sara Lind, to develop students’ visual art, literacy and creative and critical thinking skills. Teachers will develop the skills to support students to explore the steam-punk inspired art style of author/illustrator Lance Balchin in his text, Mechanica. They will imagine and create their own mechanica-inspired sculptures using a combination of wire and found technology. This sculpture will become central to the students' written work as they work imaginatively, creatively, interpretively and critically to compose imaginative texts that experiment with language, structure, ideas and stylistic features.
